A fork

I’ve often wondered why I remember the fork. I haven’t found an answer to that question yet. It happened in the blink of an eye – well, it must have, because in this flash of a memory there’s no before or after, just a fork heading towards me in slow motion and hyperspeed all at the same time.

Life in a big family is full of these split-second moments, and my family is very big. Living in Ghana, my siblings and I were surrounded by aunties and uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers and everything in between. Then there were the cousins, a little band of mischief-makers. For the adults, looking after us all meant they had to have eyes in the back of their head.

The fork came towards me. A second later I felt a searing pain shoot through my arm. The fork’s pointy tines had landed square in my armpit, leaving four perfectly even holes behind. It turned out that on the other end of this fork was my little cousin Anthony. He was just old enough to know that he shouldn’t have done it, but young enough to be forgiven for it – after he’d been well and truly reprimanded by my auntie, of course.

Then there’s nothing more; the memory bank closes and we’re back to the void. No aftermath, no healing, nothing but the scar I was left with, which faded over the years… until it just disappeared, as everything does eventually. Maybe that’s what keeps the fork in my mind. Maybe it’s a reminder that we never really know what’s around the corner. Maybe it’s a reminder that in a split second life can change in a way that we can’t see coming because, as much as we’d like to, we don’t have eyes in the backs of our heads. Maybe it’s a call to remember that painful things happen, but at some point the pain will end, the scars will fade to nothing and a new day will begin again.
